Akon will personally light up the communities around J.W. Pearson Elementary School in Monrovia and Zuluyee Public School in the Ganta District of Nimba County, using solar-generated lighting technology.

While 80 percent of the world's population has access to electricity, only 30 percent of the African population enjoys this benefit. Nigeria's Lagos Tourism Industry set to boom

Image result for lagos tourism

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism accounted for only 1.7% of Nigeria’s GDP in 2014

Lagos: Traffic jams may clog the city and the beaches look like garbage dumps, but for the Lagos state government developing tourism is now a do or die matter.

Nigeria has survived almost exclusively on oil revenues for decades, but the plunge in crude prices since mid-2014 along with militant attacks on oil infrastructure have driven the continent’s economic giant into a recession.

“We must find alternatives,” Lagos state tourism minister, Folorunsho Folarin-Coker, said. “Encouraging tourism is a matter of life or death now.”

Lagos, Nigeria’s financial hub, is arguably the best placed to respond positively to the economic crisis.

The city has the most solid economic foundation, accounting for 25 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product and 65 per cent of commercial activities, according to Lagos state ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Despite a suffocating dollar shortage that has made imports more expensive for businesses, those in the metropolis of 20 million say the city is ready for reform.

World Tourism Day Holds September 27

Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization [UNWTO] has celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.

The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.

At its 12th Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 1997, the UNWTO General Assembly decided to designate a host country each year to act as the Organization’s partner in the celebration of World Tourism Day.

At its 15th Session in Beijing, China, in October 2003, the Assembly decided the following geographic order to be followed for World Tourism Day celebrations: 2006 in Europe; 2007 in South Asia; 2008 in the Americas; 2009 in Africa and 2011 in the Middle East.

The late Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi, a Nigerian national, was the one who proposed the idea of marking September 27 of every year as World Tourism Day.

INTERESTING FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ABEOKUTA

Abeokuta was a sovereign nation for 20 years and 11 months before the British almagamated her with the rest of Nigeria. She had her own laws, Police Force, Civil Service and was well organized. The Alake was the head of the defunct government known as the Egba United Government (1 February 1893- 1 January 1914). The almagamation with the rest of Nigeria did not go down well with the Egba people and this resulted in the Adubi War (1918). I have compiled some facts about this ancient and paramount city that seats as the capital of Ogun State and also the pride of Egbaland.
Abeokuta was founded in 1830, with Sodeke as her leader. The initial name of Abeokuta was “Oko Adagba” meaning “Adagba’s farmstead”-Adagba was an Itoko farmer. Sodeke who led the Egbas met him there.
Abeokuta means ‘under a rock’, signifying the protection which the Olumo Rock offered the Egbas during attacks.
Since the discovery of Olumo Rock, no one has fallen from it. Not even once.

ADIRE HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2016

WHAT IS ADIRE?
Adire is the name given to indigo dyed cloth produced by Yoruba women of south western Nigeria using a variety of resist dye techniques. Adire translates as tie and dye, and the earliest cloths were probably simple tied designs on locally-woven hand-spun cotton cloth much like those still produced in Mali. In the early decades of the twentieth century however, the new access to large quantities of imported shirting material made possible by the spread European textiles merchants in certain Yoruba towns, notably Abeokuta, enabled women dyers to become both artist and entrepreneurs in a booming new medium. New techniques of resist dyeing were developed, most notably the practice of hand painting designs on the cloth with a cassava starch paste prior to dyeing. This was known as Adire Eleko.

Alongside these a new a new style was soon developed that speeded up decoration by using metal stencil cut from the sheets of tin that lined tea-chest. Another method was to use sewn raffia, sometimes in combination with tied sections, while other clothes were simply folded repeatedly and tied or stitched in a place.

How and what made Oyo Empire colapse

Shortly after Oyo Empire expanded her influence westwards, capturing Port Novo and making Dahomey (present-day Benin Republic) a vassal state pay tributes of 40 guns and 400 loads of cowries and corals regularly to Oyo, of course after phases of wars that made Oyo army a dread to the Dahomeyans, Alafin (Emperor) Labisi appointed a new Basorun (Prime Minister).

To check the Alaafin from becoming too dictatorial, the Prime Minister according to the constitution could pass a vote of no confidence that would turn the Oyo Mesi (Legislators) against the Alaafin and an empty calabash would be handed to the emperor signaling that he was required commit suicide and pave way for a new Alaafin since the Oyo Mesi had lost confidence in his rule.

The Basorun was a high priest controlling all the cults except Sango and Ifa, so this could make him declare that the ancestors and Heavens had lost confidence in an Alaafin. Prior to the appointment of Ga, the unwritten constitution of the empire had been amended from the more ancient style that the Aremo (heir apparent) ruled after an Alaafin passed on.

The new constitution demanded that the heir apparent died with the Alaafin so as to pass on succession without disputes and in a way make the monarchical system a sort of republic. This made Basorun Ga more powerful. Ga became despotic and power drunk and from the slightest accusation that an Alaafin or his Prince disrespected the Oyo Mesi to the accusation that an Alaafin was assuming airs of superiority, Basorun Ga raised five Alaafins to the throne and successively destroyed four of them.

He and his family ruled despotically for twenty years, almost as if they were the Alaafins. By the reign of the fifth emperor, Alaafin Abiodun, the people were fed up of Ga’s dictatorship. On an appointed day, with the support of Are-Ona Kakanfo (Military Commander of Oyo army) Oyabi, the Alaafin and the people broke the jinx of Ga’s powerful magic and rounded up all his family (except Ojo, Ga’s first son) and were seized and killed, Ga himself was burnt to death in his house.

Abiodun’s reign then went on peacefully and lasted from 1774 to 1789, his was a golden reign. However, the center was no longer holding the seams of the Empire together after 20 years of internal imbalance triggered by Ga. Taking advantage of the lawless years, Egba province under the warrior, Lishabi, had proclaimed their independence and migrated towards their present location in Abeokuta. The Egbas had been aggrieved by the oppression of the resident Ilaris (governors) in their three provinces within the empire and the absence of any authority to hold them in check.

Animals Roam Free And People Are Caged in the Most Ferocious Zoo In China

At the Lehe Ledu Wildlife Zoo in Chongqing City, China visitors pay to travel through in a caged vehicle while the animals roam free around them.

When people go to visit animals at the zoo, they never get to see how if feels to be the ones in the cages. Well a zoo in China is switching it up by having the visitors in the cages when they go see animals.

The people get to get up close and personal with the wild and sometimes ferocious animals, and the animals get to have freedom to walk around the parks without being in an enclosure.

The people are safe inside the caged area, and the humans get to leave whenever they want. Whereas in a regular zoo, the animals are cooped up all day long in their cages.

The Lehe Ledu Wildlife Zoo is one of the very few zoos in the world where humans moved through the park in a vehicle. They get to offer food through a small gap to lions, tigers and bears.

Foreign airlines to sack 2000 Nigerian workers due to CBN rules on Forex and funds transfer

Foreign airlines to sack 2000 Nigerian workers: The National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, revealed that foreign airlines are planning to sack about two thousand Nigerian employees due to the CBN International rule on restrictions of Forex and funds transfer which prevents them from transferring their salaries to their respective home countries to take care of basic needs.

In a letter which was addressed to the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika and made available to newsmen, Acting General Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Olayinka Abioye said if this happens, a lot of Nigerians would be jobless and be thrown back into the labour market which is already full. He added that if these employees are sacked, the airline industry will also suffer because there would be a shortage of workers. He asked for the Federal Government to intervene and help the foreign airlines out and save the workers jobs at the same time.

Abioye said:
“The reason being adduced for this danger is that their earnings in the past year is under lock with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN , as they are unable to transfer these earnings to their respective home countries to meet operational costs in accordance with international rules.”

“Following concerns raised recently by leaders of these workers and other stakeholders and in appreciation of the good intent of the government’s fiscal policy, we humbly make this clarion call for your (Minister) intervention to grant foreign airlines concession to repatriate their proceeds to their home countries,” he said.

“We hasten to place on the front burner an emerging threat confronting over 2, 000 private sector aviation workers in Nigeria which requires your intervention to forestall imminent loss of jobs of these number of workers,”.
