Foreign airlines to sack 2000 Nigerian workers due to CBN rules on Forex and funds transfer

Foreign airlines to sack 2000 Nigerian workers: The National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, revealed that foreign airlines are planning to sack about two thousand Nigerian employees due to the CBN International rule on restrictions of Forex and funds transfer which prevents them from transferring their salaries to their respective home countries to take care of basic needs.

In a letter which was addressed to the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika and made available to newsmen, Acting General Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Olayinka Abioye said if this happens, a lot of Nigerians would be jobless and be thrown back into the labour market which is already full. He added that if these employees are sacked, the airline industry will also suffer because there would be a shortage of workers. He asked for the Federal Government to intervene and help the foreign airlines out and save the workers jobs at the same time.

Abioye said:
“The reason being adduced for this danger is that their earnings in the past year is under lock with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN , as they are unable to transfer these earnings to their respective home countries to meet operational costs in accordance with international rules.”

“Following concerns raised recently by leaders of these workers and other stakeholders and in appreciation of the good intent of the government’s fiscal policy, we humbly make this clarion call for your (Minister) intervention to grant foreign airlines concession to repatriate their proceeds to their home countries,” he said.

“We hasten to place on the front burner an emerging threat confronting over 2, 000 private sector aviation workers in Nigeria which requires your intervention to forestall imminent loss of jobs of these number of workers,”.

NCAA LOGO
Lagos – The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said on Tuesday that it received a total of 7,328 complaints from both domestic and international air passengers in 2015.
This is contained in a statement issued by the NCAA.
Adurogboye explained that complaints such as short landing (delay in arrival of passenger’s luggage), was a normal occurrence in civil aviation globally.

“Short landing is deliberate and it is for the safety of passengers. The airlines have put measures in place to ameliorate the discomfort of passengers.

“Passengers, who have such complaints, should go to the airline’s counter at the airport and report.

“In addition to that, they should demand for compensation because that is the law.

“If the airline refuses to compensate them, then they should report the matter to NCAA.

“The passengers should also realise that short landing is a common occurrence in civil aviation.

“That is why they should not go into the tarmac to protest like they did at the Abuja Airport recently because Turkish Airlines delayed their luggage,’’ he said.

Adurogboye, therefore, advised passengers to desist from taking the law into their hands, adding that it was a very wrong approach to redressing their complaints.

Rwandair to start flights to Mumbai, India

RewandAir, the national carrier for Rwanda, will start direct flights from Rwanda into Mumbai effective September 2016. Clarence Fernandes, India representative, Rwanda Development Board, which also promotes tourism, reveales, “RwandAir will be coming in with four weekly flights from Mumbai to Dar-e-salaam and Dar-e-salaam to Kigali on A-330 with first, business and economy class.

They will initially come in with 244 seats and as the demand increases the airline will scale up to 274 seats. This will be the shortest route, connecting Mumbai and Kigali. Dar-e-Salaam has a large Indian population so it was most practical to do a stop-over here.”

South Africa Airways starts Abuja-Johannesburg flight

The South Africa Airways (SAA) commenced direct flight from Abuja to Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday. The airline said the inaugural flight is part of measures to boost bilateral relationship between Nigeria and South Africa.
Regional General Manager-Africa and Middle East Aaron Munetsi and the Country Manager-Nigeria Thobi Duma said that it has always been the dream of SAA to ensure the air travel in the continent hence it sustained efforts since it began operation in Nigeria in 1998 in Lagos as the then Federal Capital of the country.
The flight will be on simultaneous to and fro operation and would be on three times weekly for a start.
South Africa High Commissioner to Nigeria Ambassador Lulu Louis Mnguni during the formal launch in November 2015 in Abuja said the flight will among others engender the tourism relationship between Nigeria and his country and that more Nigerians are expected to visit South Africa and vice versa.
